The Big Comeback
After nearly two years away from the spotlight, last Sunday we were delighted once again to be sharing the stage with Tony Fisher! Tony's had some health problems over the last couple of years; "Having half your stomach removed isn't ideal for a trumpet player", he says. He may be in his mid-eighties but it'll take more than that to stop this living legend of the music world.
Tony is the man you hear on the original "Dr No" soundtrack (as well as countless further Bond themes), Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual" and The Beatles' "Sargent Pepper" album. He's toured with Sinatra, recorded with Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald, he was a member of the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band, a sideman for Ronnie Scott, Tubby Hayes and John Dankworth and leader of the Bert Kaempfert Orchestra. And that's just the tip of the iceberg!
Tony's taking one step at a time but we're hoping he's going to be fit enough to join us at Sinah Warren next month. I can tell you now that he was sounding as brilliant as ever on Sunday.
Sunday's gig was the monthly Jazz session at Croham Hurst Golf Club, Croydon, run by Pete Long. Singer Jo Harrop is next month's guest. Entry is £12 or £36.50 with a rather fantastic lunch. That's the last Sunday of every month. To book, email Pete here.
